Will Prime Minister retire?

Recently we had heard about Two veteran politicians in Sri Lanka were rumored to be retiring.  Former Prime Minister and Leader of the United National Party Ranil Wickremesinghe is retiring from politics and the current Prime Minister and Leader of the People’s Front Mahinda Rajapaksa is retiring from politics.

 

The news on Ranil Wickremesinghe was later he was corrected and it was stated that he would only resign from the leadership of the UNP.  He had made this statement after his defeat in the general election.  Later, the Legal Secretary of the party stated that his resignation would take place after December 31.

 

The discussion was overshadowed by the publicity surrounding the resignation of the current Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.  Lanka C News, which is considered to be a website of Minister Wimal Weerawansa, has been publishing news in this regard for several days.  An article in the Daily Mirror also drew the attention of many.  The Daily Mirror reported that the current prime minister is set to retire in 2022.  Meanwhile, it was reported on social media that Mahinda Rajapaksa would retire from politics after 18 months due to a family decision following the advice of his doctors.

 

But the C News website reiterates that the prime minister is not retiring.  It states that a government was appointed at the last general election for five years and that the Prime Minister has stated that he is not prepared to step down before that.
