President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has agreed to pardon former parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake, who is serving a four-year prison sentence for contempt of court, parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake said on the 28th at Angunakolapelessa.
This was stated by Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake while visiting Ranjan Ramanayake at the Angunakolapelessa Prison.
Now former MP Ranjan Ramanayake has been imprisoned for about 4 months. He is not imprisoned as a criminal. There is no provision in the law books for contempt of court and how to punish those who insult the judiciary. It is in such a situation that he is imprisoned. Opposition parties will not be reluctant to grant a presidential pardon to Ranjan Ramanayake. He too is expected to be released from prison as soon as possible. Even the Leader of the Opposition had asked President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to pardon former MP Ranjan Ramanayake. The President has agreed to prepare the relevant documents and make that request. We are hopeful that Ranjan Ramanayake will be released from prison soon.
