Supreme Court grants relief to Ahnaf Jazeem

The court has allowed his lawyers to meet Ahnaf Jazeem, a teacher and poet who has been arrested and detained for more than a year under the Terrorism Act.

Ahnaf Jazeem, popularly known among the Tamil readers as Mannarmudu Ahnaf, was arrested by the Terrorism Investigation Division (CTID) in 2017 for his ‘extremist ideology’ and alleging that he was promoted that ‘extremist ideology’ with his poems.

On Wednesday, August 4, fundamental rights petition, which was filed by poet Ahnaf Jasim, who was arrested on May 16, 2020 and is being held in police custody, was heard by a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court.

The petition filed by the poet’s lawyer Sanjaya Wilson Jayasekara includes the Director of the Terrorism Investigation Division, the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General. President’s Counsel K.S. Kanagishwaran said that although he went to meet his client for advice on the application filed in court, it was unsuccessful.

Additional Solicitor General Nerin Pulle, appearing for the Attorney General, stated that the suspect is currently in court custody and was produced before the Magistrate’s Court after the detention order was finalized. The Additional Solicitor General further stated that the Attorney General has filed limited objections against the suspect Jasim’s fundamental rights petition.

After considering the facts presented, the bench directed the prison authorities to allow his lawyers to meet the remand prisoner Ahnaf Jazeem. The petition will be considered further on September 8.
