Gotabhaya invites Tamil Diaspora

President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has invited the Tamil Diaspora to join the country’s internal affairs in building reconciliation, further strengthening the Rajapaksa government’s commitment to international human rights organizations and the Western countries.

He stated that “Sri Lanka’s internal problems should be resolved through an internal mechanism of the country and the Tamil Diaspora is invited for discussions” during a meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on the 19th.

The president, who is in New York to attend the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, told Secretary-General Guterres that the government would “take immediate action on missing persons and issue death certificates.”

The Head of State of Sri Lanka has also assured the Secretary-General that he will work with the United Nations for reconciliation.

“I had fruitful discussions with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, on the joint promotion of reconciliation in Sri Lanka as the only way to a prosperous future. We also discussed rebuilding the economy in the face of the Covid 19 epidemic and ensuring an uninterrupted educational process, ”President Gotabhaya Rajapakse tweeted in English.

Secretary-General of the UN, Antonio Guterres, said, “The United Nations extends its fullest support to Sri Lanka in promoting unity among nations.”

President Rajapaksha stated the UN Secretary-General that he had released many youths arrested on suspicion of “terrorist activities” after coming to power, expediting the law on others who could not be released. He said he would not hesitate to grant a presidential pardon to the Tamil youth who have been in custody for a long time, considering their long term detention.

President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa made a lengthy statement on the impact of the Covid epidemic on education and the economy of Sri Lanka. He said his aim was to strengthen democracy in Sri Lanka and that his government would not use batons and water cannons as it had done in the past, and had set aside a separate area near its office for protesters.
