An attempt to socialize violence through emergency law – Prof. Chandraguptha Thenuwara

Prof. Chandraguptha Thenuwara says that by imposing the state of emergency when the government has no money, it is being turned into a kind of distorted drama, indicating the need for violence for the welfare of the people.

He pointed out that the government had turned the Covid epidemic into a political spring and that they were shocked by the unexpected protests by the people of the country while attempting to pass the Kotelawala Act.

He recalled that during the last Covid epidemic, the infected were taken away by the army and the media portrayed Covid as a social enemy and that this created a socio-cultural distortion.

But during the Covid period, government ceremonies and all other functions were held, he said. Prof. Chandraguptha Thenuwara points out that the government took steps to impose a state of emergency not only in the face of the Covid epidemic but also in the face of rising commodity prices and economic problems.

He points out that the representation in Parliament today is weak and that freedom of expression and expression is being undermined and that this is affecting even the artists in the society.

He was speaking at a panel discussion on “Emergency Law Second to Covid” held by journalists for rights.
