In this morning Criminal Investigations Department has been arrested Parliamentarian Rishad Bathiudeen.
He was arrested from an apartment complex down Ebenezer place in Dehiwala. DIG Ajith Rohana said following preliminary inquiries, MP Rishad Bathiudeen will be produced before court.
The Attorney General last week ordered Police to arrest MP Bathiudeen on charges of criminal misappropriation of public funds and violation of election laws over the transportation of internally displaced persons in Sri Lanka Transport Board owned buses during the 2019 Presidential Election.
The Attorney General instructed Police to obtain a warrant to arrest MP Bathiudeen and two others. However, the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court ordered that Police can arrest the group without a warrant.
Accordingly, the Attorney General advised Police to proceed with the arrests. An accountant among the group was arrested in Kirulapone, was remanded until the 26th of October.
However, during the past six days police had not been able to arrest the former Minister. The CID is conducting further investigation.
