The OIC of the Maharagama Traffic Division was hit by a small lorry near Parami Kulatunga Mawatha on the Pannipitiya High Level Road at around 8.30 am on the 29th and fell on the bonnet of a car traveling on the other side. The police constable who was driving on the road ran into the driver of the lorry. Videos of him being knocked to the ground were circulated instantly recently.
Because of this, the police could not look away. The police officer who assaulted him was arrested by the police and his work was suspended.
When the lorry driver was arrested by the police and produced before court on the 30th, Gangodawila Magistrate Prasanna Alwis had ordered that he be released on a personal bail of Rs.
The arrested police officer was also remanded for seven days and the Magistrate had ordered that a psychiatric report be called against him.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Public Security Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera had stated that a police officer has never had the right to attack the people like that.
He also revealed that 18 police officers have been involved in road accidents this year, killing 18 people.
He said that 293 police officers were involved in road accidents while on duty last year and 28 of them were killed.
However, the officer will be released on bail in another week. And the job will be returned with the help of someone, a politician. Especially since this officer has 29 years of service and will look into it.
