Sri Lanka on the way to India…

The Indian government has ignored warnings from the Indian health sector about a second wave of covid 19. The Modi government had given the opportunity to hold many competitions, including cricket matches attended by thousands of people as well as Hindu religious ceremonies attended by tens of thousands of people to drown in the holy river. At the same time, the Modi government had allowed large-scale election rallies across the country, without any restrictions on Kovid security laws.

As a result, the number of covid patients reported in India was less than 100,000 before April, and by April 15, more than 200,000 patients were reported daily. Today, the situation has worsened. Over 300,000 Kovid patients have been reported from India over the past week. 379,459 patients were reported yesterday (28) alone. The number of Kovid deaths has also risen to more than 3,000 a day. Accordingly, 3,647 Kovid deaths were reported as of yesterday.

Meanwhile, Ramanan Lakshmanarayan, director of the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics and Policy in New Delhi, said the number could be 30 times higher. He also said that one member of every family in Delhi had died of covid 19 by now and that the number of deaths in India could be around 13,000 a day.

Prime Minister Modi, who gained unlimited power in the last election, has become intoxicated with that power and has made the whole of India a big city today due to his irresponsible actions. According to Indian media reports, the entire hospital system is overflowing with patients infected with the virus, which is now unbearable for the Indian hospital system. Some patients have died on the highway without even being able to be admitted to a hospital.

Today in Sri Lanka we are facing a similar experience to neighboring India. Before the New Year, less than 150 covid 19 patients were reported from Sri Lanka. The present government, which won a victory similar to Modi’s, did the same with Modi. Modi in Sri Lanka also acted on the advice given by the health sector as he was able to successfully suppress the first and second covid wave. This was made clear by the statements made by the Minister of State for the Suppression of covid, Sudarshani Fernandopulle. She stated that the proposals made to impose travel restrictions during the last festive season were defeated.

Accordingly, we, as well as India, went to meet and celebrate all the gods and goddesses, including the God of Kataragama, to shop for the New Year and to celebrate the New Year, and to hold various festivities and excursions from the Nuwara Eliya Festival. The government also extended its full support to this end. Until last week, many had forgotten if there was a covid epidemic. Health advice went to the dog.

The result was an increase of less than 150 reported cases per day to 1,000. The number of arrivals reported yesterday (28) was 1,466. The number of deaths per day was similarly high. Today the whole country is in a state of great confusion due to not paying proper attention at the crucial moment.

Dr. Chandimandarandi, Head of the Department of Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, said,

He also says that the rate of spread of the virus is up to 50% higher than ever before. He also says that the mortality rate is 50% higher than the normal variant.

Meanwhile, it is reported that the Intensive Care Units at IDH, Kalubowila, Anuradhapura and Gampaha Hospitals are already full of Kovid patients. A newspaper also reported that 14 doctors had been diagnosed with Kovid.

Commenting on the current situation, Upul Rohana, President of the Public Health Inspectors’ Association, said that corona clusters were being reported all over the country and that the percentage of infected people was around 30% during random PCR tests conducted in some areas.

In the next few days, there will be no control but another development of this situation. Experts say vaccination is the only solution available. But we have only 1.5 million to come at a time when we need 32 million to come in and 16 million out of the estimated population. Another 30.5 million vaccines are needed. Then we have to live until we get it.

In order to prevent further spread of the disease, we need to control the disease to some extent. The only solution is to limit travel to at least two to three weeks, increase the number of PCR tests to at least 50,000, and make an accurate assessment of the spread of the disease and take the necessary action. But we are already on the delay list.
