Sri Lanka has lowest teachers salary in the South Asia…

As World Teachers’ Day is celebrated around the world on October 5, Sri Lanka’s leading teachers’ union has accused the government of distorting the celebration of October 6 and is urging the government to address teacher issues on World Teachers’ Day.

Although the government has decided to close the entire school system in Sri Lanka due to the Corona epidemic at the time of the World Teachers ‘Day celebrations, the Ceylon Teachers’ Union says that teachers ‘salaries and professional issues should be addressed based on the global celebration of Teachers’ Day.

The Ceylon Teachers ‘Union points out that the Teachers’ and Principals ‘Services were established in 1994 and that the Teachers’ Service Minute was issued on October 6 of the same year. The Ceylon Teachers ‘Union emphasizes that October 6 is celebrated as the Teachers’ Day in Sri Lanka.

“October 06 is Teachers’ Day in Sri Lanka.  The Ceylon Teachers Union has repeatedly requested that this be celebrated on October 5 to coincide with World Teachers’ Day.  The Ceylon Teachers’ Union urges the present Minister of Education Prof. G.L Peiris and the Secretary of Education Prof. Kapila Perera to take steps to commemorate the Teachers’ Day in Sri Lanka on October 5.

Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Teachers ‘Union, points out that this year’s World Teachers’ Day comes at a time when 247,000 Sri Lankan teachers and 15,000 principals are struggling to win professional demands, including their salaries.
