Punishment of Ranjan Ramanayake – Victor Ivan

Punishment of Ranjan Ramanayake – Victor Ivan

The four-year sentence handed down by Parliament to Ranjan Ramanayake by the Supreme Court on contempt of court charges cannot be considered a fair or just sentence in accordance with the law. It shows the extent of the thinking of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. Modernist-minded courts do not punish even criticism that is insulting to the judiciary. Contempt to be punished at present is considered to be an activity that prohibits the illegal execution of a court order or judgment.

Although Ranjan Ramanayake’s statement regarding the court is not correct, the sentence given for it is not fair at all. The policy pursued by the judiciary against him is completely contrary to the vision of the ICCPR.

From the face book of Victor Ivan.
