Cabinet approves amendment to Assistance and Protection of Victims and Witnesses of Crime Act.
The Minister of Justice says that the suspects and the accused have to suffer severely as they have to submit a request to the Court of Appeal to obtain bail under the provisions of Section 10 of the Assistance and Protection of Victims and Witnesses of a Crime No. 4 of 2015.
In particular, due to the location of the Court of Appeal in Colombo, the government has stated that it would be appropriate to amend the Court of Appeal as a High Court instead of the Court of Appeal, as suspects living in remote areas would have difficulty in filing bail applications.
Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers which met on Monday (January 11) approved the proposal made by the Minister of Justice to take necessary steps to amend the Assistance to Protection and Protection of Victims and Witnesses of Crime Act, the Government Information Department said.
