Currently, gas explosions are being reported from all parts of the island. Scattered all over the place, about the gas cylinder killer. I do not know. Every now and then he wakes up to find out if there is a gas leak. So the husband should be awake from time to time. Sixty-nine million voters are talking nonsense that this is deadly dhal. This gas jerk started because Litro was circling to bolster profits. Now Litro says that the composition of the domestic gas cylinders was introduced to the market last July with some changes. This is what a Litro manager, I. Mr. Wijeyeratne. The then Consumer Affairs Authority also paid some attention to this. But the company did not take it into account. Gas consumers say the gas is running out sooner than usual. The end result of this play by Litro, which reduced gas composition and weight, is to set houses on fire everywhere today.
Acting Members of Parliament Mujibur Rahman, JC Alawatuwala, Hector Appuhamy, Velu Kumar, Sujith Sanjaya Perera and Dulip Wijesekera made a written request to the Sri Lanka Standards Institution on the 30th to submit a report on the gas standard. Acting Deputy Director General of the Standards Institution Samanthi Narangoda said that although there was a standard for gas, it was not possible to comment on it at that time. This statement is not second to the statement made by the head of the Standards Institution at the time of the importation of the poisonous coconut oil, saying that these institutions are maintained at the expense of the state.
The Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa stated this while addressing a question in Parliament regarding the gas issue. “The problem began with the introduction of an 18-liter hybrid gas cylinder earlier this year. This fraudulent act has been carried out to mislead the consumers and make huge profits. Also, the Hon. Minister of State said in Parliament last Saturday that the process was halted and the gas was removed from the market as this was not done without proper notice to the Consumer Affairs Authority or any other government agency.
According to the Hon. Minister of State, the fraudulent act was over. Lawsuits have been filed against the perpetrators. However, accidents due to gas leaks are being reported across the country. One of the main problems uncovered in the 18-liter gas cylinder fraud was changing the composition and reducing the weight of the gas cylinder. The second most serious problem was the change in the proportion of propane and butane in the gas cylinder to a composition that would not be suitable for a tropical country like ours. That is, as the Hon. Minister of State explained to this House, for this fraud, the composition of butane and propane in a gas cylinder has been changed from 70:30 to 50:50 ”
President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has come up with a brilliant proposal to close the gas leak hole as the gas crisis goes from chaos to chaos. By appointing a committee to look into the matter and submit a report within two weeks. Professor Shantha Walpola of the University of Moratuwa has been appointed as the chairman of the committee, while the other members are DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon. The funny thing is how many more lives will be ruined by this game where the gas cylinders are not immediately brought back. Therefore, gas consumers should be told that the Presidential Committee should take steps to ensure their own safety. The problem, however, is that there are ongoing reports of gas explosions and deaths in Colombo, Kottawa, Weligama, Alawwa, Ratnapura and Nikaweratiya. But like Litro, the president-led government is still asleep.
