A retired judge will be appointed to conduct an independent inquiry into the recent incidents at Welikada and Anuradhapura prisons, Justice Minister Ali Sabbari said in Parliament today (22) answering a question raised by MP Gajendra Kumar Ponnambalam.
Minister of State Lohan Ratwatte has been charged with entering two prisons under the influence of alcohol and threatening two Tamil prisoners at the Anuradhapura Prison on September 12 with a firearm.
But he denied the allegations. Meanwhile, political groups as well as civil society organizations have called for an independent inquiry into the matter.
Responding to questions in Parliament today, Minister Ali Sabri condemned the incidents and said he would apologize to Tamil prisoners who were allegedly threatened by Minister of State Lohan Ratwatte.
