Government get ready to amend Torture Act…

Article 11 of the Constitution explicitly prohibits torture and other inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment. The government has focused on condemning the perpetrators of such acts and tightening the law against them.

Therefore, the Government further recognizes the need to amend the Penalties in the Convention against Torture and Other, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment Act No. 22 of 1994, which is currently in effect.

Accordingly,to the Government information department, the cabinet had give approved in 14th December to  the proposal made by Ministry of Justice Ali Sabri  for make a draft to amend this Act and instruct policy makers.

According to a report released by Freedom From Torture, a London-based international organization against torture, in February this year, the highest number of victims referred for clinical and legal assistance came from Sri Lanka within eight years.
