GMOA requested people to use every Friday to clean their home gardens

As there is an alarming increase in the number of dengue infections and mosquito breading grounds, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) requested people to use every Friday to clean their home gardens and the environment.

Addressing the media GMOA Media Committee Member Dr. Prasad Kolabage said that when compared with previous years, this year recorded an increase in the number of dengue infected patients and
mosquito density.

In 2020, only 31,000 dengue cases were reported, but during the past six months, more than 25,000 such cases have been reported, he said.

“The vast majority of these cases are reported from the Western Province (WP), where nearly 40% of the total cases are from. “It is no secret that the Colombo district is at high risk,” Dr. Kolabage said.

With the increase of dengue positive cases, there is a risk of the number of deaths going up, and that risk is intensifying with the  transportation issues and shortage of medicines in the country.

Therefore, we urge the people and the government to pay more attention to this possible risk, if not, consequences will befall them in heavily the future.

As a responsible medical organisation, we should point out the increase in the number of dengue cases is possible with this rainy weather condition. With the current issues in the country, we have failed to pay our attention on dengue spread.

However, the government has announced every Friday as a holiday. People can use that day to clean their own gardens and the environment around them.
