Drafting of the new constitution is in the final stages

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa says that the drafting of the new constitution is in the final stages.

President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva was appointed as head of the committee to draft the new constitution. Former Presiding Judge of the Court of Appeal Abdul Waheeb, Abdul Salam, Prof. Wasantha Seneviratne, Prof. G.H Peiris, President’s Counsel Manohara de Silva , President’s Counsel Sanjeewa Jayawardena , President’s Counsel Samantha Ratwatte, President’s Counsel Naveen Marapana ,  and Senior Lecturer A.S Surveyswaran serve as other members of the committee.

‘ Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour ‘ policy manifesto promised to bring a new constitution to the country. According to that mandate, the government is currently working to bring in a new constitution.  The Prime Minister says that recognizing the shortcomings of the old constitution, that the new constitution is being drafted.

The Prime Minister further stated that a Presidential Task Force has been appointed to submit proposals for a conceptual legal framework unique to the country and that a constitution with proposals specific to Sri Lanka be prepared after studying the views of various parties.

The Prime Minister made this statement in Parliament today (10) in response to a question raised by the Leader of the Jathika Jana Balawegaya Party, Parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
