Disappeared people’s relatives launched protest…

Relatives of those who have been forcibly disappeared in the North and east, have staged a firefight.

The protest, which was attended by a large number of Tamil women in black robes and skulls, began at 9 am on Saturday, the 20th anniversary of the relatives’ disappearance.

The walk started near the Ganadevi Kovil in Kilinochchi and proceeded along the A9 road and ended near the Kandasamy Kovil.

Protesters chanted slogans calling for Sri Lanka to be brought before the International Court of Justice to seek justice in the country.

The mothers told reporters that a message containing their demands had also been sent to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The letter states that the only recourse is international, as local mechanisms, including the Office of the Missing Persons, have been of no help to them.

The letter states that the government is trying to intimidate mothers who are fighting democratically for justice by summoning them to the Terrorism Investigation Unit and using intelligence officers to take photographs.

Concerns over the disappearances have been fueled by protests in the province over the disappearance of UNHRC resolution on Sri Lanka from next week in Geneva. Reporters say.
