Sri Lanka’s stadiums to be sold to private sector….?

It is said that the government is preparing to sell the stadiums owned by the Ministry of Sports, the stadiums owned by the Sports Development Department and the stadiums owned by the local government bodies to the private sector.

Sources from the Ministry of Sports say that a cabinet memorandum has been prepared to hand over the stadiums belonging to state institutions to the private sector alleging that the stadiums are not being maintained properly and that it is to be presented to the Cabinet today (09).

It is said that these stadiums are to be handed over to the private sector on the basis of self-financing control and management with the contribution of the public and private sectors.

Accordingly, Minister of Sports Namal Rajapaksa is scheduled to present a cabinet paper today to give the power to privatize stadiums to the Sugathadasa National Stadium complex.

Accordingly, the Sugathadasa National Stadium Complex Authority will be empowered to sign agreements with the private sector on privatization of stadiums as well as with state institutions currently owning stadiums.
