A 33-year-old Sri Lankan woman has died at an immigration detention center in Nagoya, Japan.
The Daily Mirror quoted the Sri Lankan embassy in Tokyo as saying that the 33-year-old woman had died on March 6.
The Sri Lankan embassy said the woman had been at the detention center in Nagoya since August last year due to her visa expiring.
A team of officials from the Sri Lankan Embassy in Japan visited the detention center in Nagoya and discussed the matter with the authorities.
Officials at the detention center have promised the Sri Lankan authorities that they will conduct an impartial investigation into the incident and submit the relevant report without delay.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the woman, a resident of Gampaha, had arrived in Japan in 2017 on a student visa.
Due to the expiration of her visa, the Japanese immigration authorities have taken her to a detention center in Nagoya since August last year.
She has complained to the authorities on several occasions regarding the food received from the center and as a result she has become physically weak.
She has been examined by doctors on six occasions and has been hospitalized twice.
However, the Sri Lankan Embassy in Tokyo said that the cause of death was not yet known and that it had instructed the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to conduct an impartial inquiry into the incident and submit a report soon.
