Shashi Weerawansa has been sentenced to 2 years in prison

Shashi Weerawansa, the wife of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, has been sentenced to 2 years in prison for the use of forged documents to obtain a passport.

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court also imposed a fine of Rs 100,000 on Shashi Weerawansa when the case in this regard was taken up for hearing today.

Weerawansa is accused of fraudulently obtaining two passports, including a diplomatic passport, by submitting forged documents to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

Weerawansa, who had submitted documents with forged names and dates of birth to obtain the passports, was initially arrested in February 2015 and later released on bail.

Thereafter, in July 2020, the Colombo Chief Magistrate issued a warrant on Shashi Weerawansa.
