Shani Abeysekara was granted interim relief by the Supreme Court today

Sub-inspector Sugath Mendis who was remanded along with former Director of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Shani Abeysekara was granted interim relief by the Supreme Court today.

The bench comprising justices Priyantha Jayawardena, Mahinda Samayawardana, and S. Thurairaiajah ordered that he be paid full salary from the date of filing the Petition.

Mendis was remanded for 11 months along with Shani Abeysekara after he refused to confess against Abeysekara for fabricating evidence in the murder case involving ex-DIG Vass Gunawardena.

He filed a fundamental rights application before the Supreme Court challenging his interdiction and withholding of his salaries.

Earlier, Shani Abeysekara and Sugath Mendis moved the Magistrate’s Court of Gampaha to dismiss the proceedings filed against them.

Facts were reported by the Colombo Crimes Division alleging that Abeysekara and Mendis fabricated evidence against former DIG Vaas Gunawardena following which the duo was remanded.

They said that the entire exercise was a result of a witch-hunt against Abeysekara and that the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) was acting at the behest of political masters, adding that the entire narrative of the CCD was a fabrication.
