It has been decided to appoint Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena, a retired judge, to investigate the allegations against Minister of State Lohan Ratwatte regarding breaking in to the Welikada and Anuradhapura prisons and behaving in a riotous manner and threatening detainees.
Justice Minister Ali Sabri recently told parliament that an independent inquiry was underway into the incident. Accordingly, it has been suggested that it would be appropriate to appoint a retired judge for that inquiry.
Earlier, she was the chairperson of the committee appointed to investigate the murders at the Mahara prison.
The Ministry of Justice says that this investigation is being carried out in addition to the investigations carried out by the Prisons Department and the Police.
The Ministry of Justice further states that she has not been officially informed about this and that it will be done in the future.
