No government needs to prevent violence – Philip Dissanayake

Philip Dissanayake, executive director of the Right to Life Human Rights Center, says no government in power has ever wanted to prevent police violence. He says that in order to secure democracy in a society, police violence and torture must be prevented.

He pointed out that the death of Gayan, who was tortured to death at the Pugoda police station, was not the first and last incident occurred due to police violence. Mr. Dissanayake said that Gayan’s death had revealed that there had been a number of illegal arrests, brutal assaults and not being hospitalized immediately in the event of an illness.

He points out that although the solutions to such cases are minimal in the courts, we must not give up the fight against it and create a discourse in the society over this.

He emphasizes that this violence will continue as long as ordinary people turn a blind eye to it while law enforcement agencies continue to unleash violence.
