Mahinda denies planning to hand over premiership to Ranil

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday (04) told The Island that he would not quit over the current political crisis. The SLPP government still had a comfortable majority in Parliament and he would therefore continue to be the PM, he said.

PM Rajapaksa denied persistent claims that UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe would succeed him soon.

The Premier said that he hadn’t at least spoken to the UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe recently, but he intended to do so in view of the current situation. Acknowledging that the public experienced many problems today, the Premier said that the government was making an attempt to resolve them expeditiously.
