Mahara detainees not released on bail – Prisoner Rights Protection Committee

Sudesh Nandimal de Silva, General Secretary of the Committee to Protect the Rights of Prisoners says that the detainees who were ordered to be released on bail by the court are being kept in the Mahara Prison without being released.

He says it has been established that all 11 inmates were shot dead during the Mahara prison riots that were being covered up at the time, and that prison high persons are now trying to justify this.

He said that a large number of detainees were being charged with damaging public property and that there were detainees who had been released on bail and questioned whether they could be re-tried.

He alleges that even inmates who have been subjected to personal harassment by the authorities are being prosecuted in connection with this incident and that inmates are being intimidated and tortured in various ways and that one prison officer has become two torturers today.

Sudesh Nandimal points out that the government led by the President is embarrassed by the inaction of a group of officials and calls on the President to intervene immediately.

He says that there is a big conspiracy behind the Mahara prison incident and a clash between the prison officials has gone beyond the inmates.
