Five suspects who were detained at the temporary quarantine center at the old Bogambara Prison premises in Kandy have fallen down the wall and died when they tried to escape from the prison wall at around 1.00 in this morning (18).
Prison officials shot for inmates who tried to climb over a 30-foot-high prison wall.
At that moment, three inmates jumped out of the wall and the other three were taken into custody by prison officials.
Two of the three who jumped out were admitted to the Kandy National Hospital with serious injuries while one died on the spot.
The other victim is a 24-year-old inmate of Thambuththegama. Acting Director of the Kandy National Hospital Iresha Fernando said that the suspect will be referred to a ward where people suspected to be infected with Covid will be admitted.
One of the three escaped from the prison has fled through the area where the Bogambara police quarters are located and a search operation has been launched with the assistance of the Police Special Task Force to arrest him.
One of the three detainees who tried to escape from the prison had climbed a large tree inside the prison premises and started a protest.
