Human Rights Commission Chairperson resigns

The Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has resigned. The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) says that Dr. Jagath Balasuriya resigned from his post last October.

Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka Nimal Karunasiri has told the media that Dr. Jagath Balasuriya has voluntarily resigned after completing nearly a year of service due to old age and health reasons.

Authorities have not yet taken steps to fill the vacancy. Dr. Jagath Balasuriya is still mentioned on the official website of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka as the Chairman of the Commission.

Dr. Jagath Balasuriya was appointed as the Chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka by Gotabhaya Rajapaksa on December 10, 2020.

Dr. M.H. Nimal Karunasiri, Dr. Vijitha Nanayake, Anusuya Shanmuganathan, H.K. Navaratne Weraduwa continues to serve as a member of this Commission
