Former Minister Badurdeen to be arrested over Ishalini’s death

While the girl’s mother has lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) seeking justice for her daughter who died of burn injuries at the house of a former minister. The Attorney General has been informed to the Court that former Minister Rishad Bathiudeen will also be arrested as a suspect in connection with the girl’s death.

Deputy Solicitor General Dileep Peiris, who appeared for the Attorney General, said that the Member of Parliament was also responsible as the householder for the death of the girl who was working as a servant at the house located in Bauddhaloka Mawatha.

He has further stated that he also intends to appear in court in the future as a suspect in this case.

When the case was produced before Colombo Additional Magistrate Sajindra Jayasuriya Yesterday [26], the Deputy Solicitor General presented a nine-page investigation report stating that since the death is questionable whether it was a suicide or a murder a post-mortem should be conducted again by a committee of senior forensic medical officers.

Accordingly, the court granted permission to exhume the body of Ishalini, who was buried in the Hatton Dayagama area.

Investigations so far have revealed that the girl had been assaulted and although there were 8 CCTVs is in operation within the house, one of them was not operating at the time. The Deputy Solicitor General further stated that 11 girls were taken from time to time to employed as maids in the house and two of them were said to have been sexually abused.

The Deputy Solicitor General emphasized that the child is defined as a person under the age of 18 according to the Ceylon Penal Code ordinance.

The Colombo Additional Magistrate has ordered to detain the broker who had brought the girl as a servant and MP Badurdeen’s wife, father and brother who arrested on suspicion of the death of the servant girl until 9th August.

After filing a complaint with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) on Monday (July 26), Mother Rajamanikkam Ranjani speek to the media that she had complained about the injustice done to her daughter. She also alleged that her daughter was not given proper food and drink from the house where she worked as a servant and moreover she was kept in a room without electric lights.

Rajamanikkam Ranjani stated that she had doubts about her daughter’s autopsy report and requested that another autopsy be conducted to reveal the truth.

Jude Kumar Ishalini, a teenage girl from Hatton, Diyagama, was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital on July 3, 2021 with burn injuries while she employed as a servant in the house of former Minister and current Member of Parliament Rishad Bathiudeen. She died of her burn injuries on the 15th while receiving treatment in Ward 73 of the Intensive Care Unit No. 2.

Some media had reported that a police investigation was underway into suspicions that she had been sexually abused for a long time.
