- The defeat of Geneva is the first time that the current government has been decisively defeated internationally. According to the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister, this is not a defeat but a victory. Such petty political talk is not enough for a foreign minister. It is a different matter to get another government spokesperson to communicate to the people. However, it is ridiculous for the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister to make such a statement in front of local and international journalists after the resolution is passed. He had earlier made an official invitation to tho9e Foreign Minister of Myanmar’s military administration and was severely displeased. The Foreign Minister has always been very close to the Head of State and is the head of the mechanism that represents the State at the international level. Therefore, the statement of the Foreign Minister is accepted by the world not only as the statement of the Minister but also as the statement of the State.
More than this story, the Foreign Minister brings back an outdated old argument. It was a group from one of the camps in the colonial world who opposed Sri Lanka. Prof. GL Peiris, a Foreign Minister during the Mahinda Rajapaksa era, made a similar statement at a press conference. These ministers are trying to revive an old ideology that has been planted in the country by the left for many years. The ideology planted in Sri Lanka about Europe and the United States has always aroused fear and suspicion about Europe and the United States among the majority of the people of Sri Lanka. The majority of Sri Lankans prefer China and Russia to the United States and Europe. But that is in politics in Sri Lanka. If those people are trying to migrate to Europe and the United States, not to China and Russia. That will and opposition was created by the leftists in this country and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. While the stories of the old imperialist camp may have been true before about 1990, the question of who the neo-colonialists are today is evolving in a world that has changed rapidly since the 1990s, and opposition to China’s economic colonialism is growing around the world.
According to the Minister, let us briefly examine how these colonialists who betrayed Sri Lanka are contributing to the economic strengthening of Sri Lanka more than the pro-Sri Lankan premiers. Sri Lanka’s economic strength depends on Europe and the United States. In particular, the strength of a country’s economy depends on its foreign exchange earnings. Its main source is export earnings. As soon as there is no economic power, Sri Lanka can be swallowed up by the kind of foreign minister called a colonialist. Sri Lanka is already being swallowed up by neo-colonial China using its debt trap. The independence of a country is protected not by the vote of the Human Rights Commission but by the contribution of a state to the economic prosperity of that country. Economic prosperity does not mean borrowing at high interest rates and building. Encouraging state exports is unique to a country’s economy.
Until now, Sri Lanka’s exports have been largely encouraged by the colonialists, the so-called foreign ministers. That is, the treacherous states of Sri Lanka. The US and European markets have been opened up to Sri Lankan exports, especially through preferential trade agreements, with tariff concessions for Sri Lankan exports and sometimes complete tariff concessions. According to the 2019 Central Bank of Sri Lanka report, Sri Lanka has made US $ 4945.8 million under preferential trade agreements, which is 41.4% of total exports. Of those exports, US $ 2766.3 million went to the European Union. $ 709 million to the United States. Exports to Australia, Japan and Canada were $ 85 million, $ 84 million and $ 73 million, respectively. That is, the so-called foreign ministers and colonialists who do not support us in Geneva. It is these exports that sustain the Sri Lankan economy after the huge amount of foreign exchange earned by sweating workers in the Middle East. It would be easier for the foreign minister’s colonists to end these concessions than to procrastinate in passing resolutions against Sri Lanka. If necessary, they can easily stop Sri Lankan exports.
The Foreign Minister should understand the reality of the situation without making opportunistic speeches in front of the media. A resolution has now been passed to cut the throat of Sri Lanka following the stupid withdrawal of a resolution co-sponsored by the Government of Sri Lanka last time. In particular, the government must realize that it is not as easy as it thinks to suppress civil society, turn civilian rule in the direction of militarization and kick human rights accountability.
