Committee to look human rights…

The 44th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council is scheduled to take place this year.

At the 43rd session of the UN Human Rights Council last year, the present government announced that it would withdraw from co-sponsoring Resolutions 30/1 and 34/1 on the promotion of reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka, which the Government has co-sponsored since 2015.

Despite the co-sponsorship of the resolutions, it is the policy of the Government of Sri Lanka to continue to work with the United Nations and its agencies to achieve accountability and human resource development to achieve lasting peace and reconciliation.

Meanwhile, President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has appointed a three-member commission to look into alleged human rights violations in the country and make recommendations on how to deal with them.

The Commission is chaired by Supreme Court Judge A.H.M.D Nawaz and has appointed retired Inspector General of Police Chandra Panranando and retired District Secretary Nimal Abeysiri as other members of the commission.  Secretary to the President P.B Jayasundara has issued a special gazette notification in this regard last night (21).
