Media Minister Keheliya Rambukewella has approved a cabinet paper to block an unidentified social media network.
He was speaking to the media in Kandy yesterday (10).
The Minister said that 17 percent of the social media in the country has been identified as non-proprietary media and that the joint cabinet paper presented to Parliament by the Minister of Justice Ali Sabri has been approved.
He said advanced democracies such as Australia had regulated such social media without owners, adding that countries with high levels of democracy enforced laws to regulate social media.
The Minister also stated that many parties are being treated unfairly as they do not have the right to respond to an allegation made by such a medium.
The Minister of Mass Media and Information Keheliya Rambukwella further stated that the owners of social media which are legally maintained will also face difficulties due to such media.
