Is this the death knell of the train service?

If all activities in the country are going on as usual, it is a serious problem that only train services have been suspended indefinitely. The Railway Trade Union Alliance has sent a letter to the Minister of Transport Pavithra Wanniarachchi requesting her to be informed of the relevant matters.

It is pointed out that even the railway authorities do not know the exact reason for not running the train and request to start the train service in accordance with a proper health care system and if it is not possible to do so? It is requested to inform what are the reasons for that.

The letter added that trains had been suspended for more than two months due to the Corona epidemic and agreed to do so to control the Corona epidemic. By now, the duties of the public service have commenced and the employees of many private sector institutions have been employed, as well as schools have been opened and all shops have been opened.

The trade union alliance says that bus services have also been started. The letter emphasized that although restrictions have been imposed on inter-provincial travel, it does not appear to be complying with those restrictions.

However, the union letter further stated that the non-operation of the trains has caused severe hardship to both public and private sector employees as well as all passengers who have used the train as a means of transport.

Railway authorities have announced that train services will be suspended until further notice. It is doubtful whether this marks the end of the railway service.

It has been pointed out that if all other activities are going on as usual, the suspension of the train is a serious problem and even the railway authorities do not know the exact reason for the non-operation of the train.
