Teacher union leader threatened in East

Batticaloa District Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Union, P. Sivananda Vidyalaya, Batticaloa, on Monday, December 6. The Ceylon Teachers Union says that a protest was launched in front of the school against Udayaruban. This was done by a group of supporters of Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pilleyan.

The General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union alleges that a group of about 25 members of MP Pillayan had closed the school gates to prevent children from entering the school when they arrived at school in the morning, disrupting the education of the students at Sivananda Vidyalaya today.

A statement signed by Joseph Stalin, the senior teacher’s union leader, said that none of the school’s teachers had reported for work today due to the incident and that the teachers had lodged a complaint with the Kantankudi police. P. Udayaruban has also lodged a complaint with the Kanthankudy Police regarding the threat to his life.

“It is a matter of grave concern that the principal of Shivananda Vidyalaya as well as the Batticaloa Zonal Director of Education have remained silent on this forcible and riotous act of forcibly closing the school gates and preventing children from entering the school while the police were watching.”

The Ceylon Teachers Union has also lodged a complaint with the Ministry of Education. The leader of the Joseph Stalin Teachers ‘Union, Joseph Stalin, said that the Ceylon Teachers’ Union had written to the IGP urging him to take immediate action against the police for not intervening and the gang for depriving school children of educational opportunities.

The Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) says that the closure of schools for a long time due to the Covid 19 epidemic has severely hampered the education of school children and that it is a serious problem for gangs to deprive children of the limited time available for education after the resumption of schooling.

Batticaloa District Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Union P. Udayaruban continued to receive various threats and pressures in this manner, and the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) further stated that this incident was an extension of those threats. This kind of pressure on Udayaruban’s right to express his views is strongly condemned.
