Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa says that steps will be taken to propose a select committee to amend the election laws to give Sri Lankan abroad the right to vote.

The Prime Minister was addressing a discussion at Temple Trees on the strategic plans of the Election Commission, the Prime Minister’s Media Unit said.

The Chairman of the Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya has stated that it is essential to amend the election laws in accordance with the strategic plan of the Commission.

The Prime Minister was briefed by the Elections Commission on the need to revise the election guarantee, provide a separate date for those who are unable to cast their ballots on the day of the election, and update the electoral roll every three months so that they can exercise their voting right as soon as they turn 18 years of age.

In addition, the Prime Minister was briefed by Commission officials on a number of issues, including the granting of voting rights to Sri Lankans living abroad, the control of election expenses, the setting up of polling stations with facilities for persons with disabilities, and the ‘e’ (e) voting system under special projects.
