Majority of Police for security of MP…

The Minister of Irrigation and the Minister of Internal Security, Home Affairs, Disaster Management, Chamal Rajapaksa stated in Parliament yesterday (23) that although the police provide security to the MPs, they cannot be given to carry their files and bags.

His statement is commendable.  The post of police officer is subject to the rule of law.  His uniform has dignity.  But when they are assigned to the elite security forces, the fate of some officers changes.

We cannot forget the instances where a powerful politician of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party had policemen who were deployed for his protection, wash the pots at home from him. There are still occasions when the police protection given to the security of the Member of Parliament has to be taken care of by all his relatives.

Buddhika Pathirana yesterday inquired from Minister Chamal Rajapaksa regarding the security of the MPs.  Speaking on behalf of the Police Department, Minister Chamal Rajapaksa said that there are 85,000 police officers on duty at present and 38,000 of them have been deployed for the security of the Members of Parliament.

Today there is a shortage of police officers throughout the island.  When you go to the police, you have to wait an hour to register a complaint.  Because there are no officers.  The officers there are under a lot of stress when it comes to investigating complaints.  Because they can’t do it all alone.  Against this backdrop, aren’t more police officers calling on MPs to protect them so that they do not harass the public?
