The Minister of Education Prof. G.L Peiris said, that the 20th amendment is only the beginning of the constitutional amendment and this is not the end.
He said that the 20th Amendment was gazette on the 2nd of this month and since then there have been criticized in various ways against it and it is a necessary feature of a democratic society.
He said that this is a sensitive government that always thinks of the people, listens to them and makes decisions and that it is common in drafting the constitution.
A committee has been appointed to study the views expressed on the 20th Amendment and submit a report to the Prime Minister and the Cabinet.
He pointed out that there are several issues that need to be resolved expeditiously, including whether the President can hold the post of Minister of Defense and that it cannot be kept as a matter of uncertainty as it is a very unfavorable situation for the country and this should have a clear legal status.
He further said that this is a matter which cannot be kept in a state of uncertainty for a long time by handing over the case to the courts and such matters should be resolved expeditiously and that the 20th Amendment was created with such a limited purpose.
