President assures Jaffna University safety

President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday requested the students of the University of Jaffna to engage in studies without any fear and suspicion, as the security and safety of the university has been assured. Meanwhile, Jaffna University Student Union Secretary Dhanujana hailed yesterday’s talks as an overwhelming success.

He said all relevant parties had come to a consensus on carrying out academic activities uninterrupted.

The President made this request when the Vice Chancellor, the academic staff and a group of parents of the students of the University of Jaffna met him at the Presidential Secretariat.

They discussed the recent clash at the university and the measures taken to ensure security for the students.

Vice Chancellor Vasanthi Arsarathnam said action has been taken to prevent such incidents in the university in the future.

President Sirisena said the government was fully responsible for the security and safety of the students. “The Police and other security sections have been informed to act sensitively towards such incidents,” he said.

They decided to appoint a committee consisting of the students and university staff to work for the safety of the students in the university.

Meanwhile, Jaffna University Student Union Secretary Dhanujana hailed yesterday’s talks as an overwhelming success.

He said all relevant parties had come to a consensus on carrying out academic activities uninterrupted.

Dhanujana said some elements had tried to blow out the incident for petty political gain. Student Union President Sashidaran said students did not harbour any animosity and added that as the leader of the union he will ensure that such incidents will not take place.

He also thanked the President for intervening in the matter.
