20 Human Rights Organizations to prepare a Joint Alternative Report for the UNCAT



Right to Life Human Rights Center (R2L) along with Center for Human Rights and Development (CHRD), International Movement Against All Forms of Discrimination and Racism (IMADR), Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA), National Fishery Solidarity (NAFSO), Families of the Disappeared (FOD), Centre for 
Peoples Dialogue (CPD), Rights Now – Collective for Democracy (RN) & INFORM Documentation Centre sent a joint report to Geneva in 2011 for the Committee Against Torture.

Again the Committee Against Torture (CAT) is about to meet in September so, Right to Life Human Rights Center takes the initiatives to gather a civil society to prepare Joint report. This time apart from the above mentioned Civil Society Organizations there are other organizations like National Peace Council (NPC), Law and Society Trust (LST), Family Rehabilitation Centre (FRC), Human Rights Office Kandy, Rule of Law Centre, Human Rights Centre Gampaha, C enter to Investigate Disappearance (CID) and other 20 organizations. 


Two day workshop on the review of the role of the torture network & the preparation of the CAT Alternative report was held at Global Towers Hotel Colombo 06, on the 12th & 13th of May.
Right to Life Human Rights Center took the initiative to organize the workshop in order to prepare a worth Alternative Report for the UN CAT Session.

Dr. Paikiasothi Saravanamuttu, Dr. Nimalka Fernando, Sudarshana Gunawardana AAL, Lakshan Dias AAL, Deanne Uyangoda AAL,  Ermiza Tegal AAL, Priyalal Sirisena AAL, Mr. Philip Dissayanayake  and Mr. Brito Fernando were present at the event as resource persons.  35 participated in the workshop (representatives from Civil Society Organizations, District Coordinators and victims).


Discussions on the Former Joint Report, an assessment of the role of the network in combating torture, extra judicial killings and other human rights violations continued… and regarding the new Alternative CAT report. All agreed to make a better one this time. 
And also to pressurize the government to implement the recommendation which have been not done in the past. The discussions will be carried out with the government Authorities.
