Fifteen political parties, and over 30 civil society groups and Trade Unions today officially joined with the ‘Samagi Jana Balawegaya’ (SJB) led by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.

The official signing ceremony was held at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre in Colombo with the participation of a large crowd.

However, UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam and the group supporting Wickremesinghe did not attend the ceremony.

The new alliance was launched despite that there was an impasse over its symbol.

The Wickremesinghe camp and the Premadasa camp had not arrived at an agreement on the symbol even as at.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya is a political alliance that is led by Opposition leader of Sri Lanka Sajith Premadasa. The alliance was formed with the approval from the working committee of United National party the contest the 2020 parliamentary election. On 11 February 2020 the election commission of Sri Lanka announced the they have accepted the party as a recognized political party in Sri Lanka. Ranjith Mandumabandara was named as the General Secretary of the party. Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) join the new alliance on 12 February 2020.
