Former Sri Lankan ambassador of Russia Udayanga Weerathunga, who has been a covert figure in the Sri Lankan media for many years, arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake yesterday. He was arrested by the CID. This is case in connection with an investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department into a transaction involving the purchase of MIG aircraft from Ukraine.

For several years, Udayanga Weerathunga was living abroad, fearing he would be arrested and evicted. But after three months his cousin Gotabhaya Rajapaksha had become the power in Sri Lanka, the disappeared Udayanga Weerathunga was again came to Sri Lanka.

Who is UDAYANGA WEERATHUNGA?

Udayanga Weerathunga, a past pupil of Nalanda College Colombo, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s, recent President Gotabhaya Rajapaksha’s, former Defense Minister Chamal Rajapaksha’s, former Minister Basil Rajapaksa’s, former US Ambassador to the United States Jaliya Wickramasinghe’s, former President of Sri Lanka Airport and Aviation Services Prasanna’s cousin brother. He is also the former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia during President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s regime.

MIG-27 aircraft deal.

The MIG fighter was the most powerful aircraft of the war. At the time, the Air Force had only four MIG fighter jets. The then government wanted to repair these four aircraft and buy four more MIG fighter planes. The Government and the Security Forces held discussions on this matter in end of the 2005 and beginning of 2006. It was decided to buy four MIG-27s from Ukraine. But Air Vice Marshal Donald Perera, former Air Force Commander, was rejected it. That was because he already had a lot of experience with MIGs that were purchased in Ukraine. He had to sort them one by one and made a report.

In 2000, under the Chandrika Bandaranaike’s government, a tender was order to DS Alliance, an arms trading company in Singapore, to buy six MiG-27s. The director of this company was a person named T.S.LEE. The aircraft was purchased by Alliance, a Ukrainian-based army weapon supplier called Ukraine mash and gave to Sri Lanka. Each flight cost was $ 1.2 million.

After the purchase of these aircraft, one fighter plane crashed near the Katunayake airport on July 24, 2001. The second aircraft crashed on August 18, and the third on July 9, 2004. Meanwhile, in 2003, the then Commander of the Air Force presented a proposal to the Defense Ministry that it was necessary to buy the MIGS again but since they were not purchased.

The request was made again in 2005-2006 after Gotabhaya Rajapaksha was appointed as the Defense Secretary. The Commander of the Air Force, Air Vice Marshal Donald Perera, gave a report to the Ministry of Defense stating that all such disasters that happened on previous time and noted MIGS aircrafts were not to be taken from this company. That was since in January 2006.

The meeting was held at the Defense Ministry again in February 2006, when one of his relatives, Udayanga Weerathunga and his friend Ukrainian national Dimitro Peregudov, participated in the event. By rejecting the report of The Commander of the Air Force, Air Vice Marshal Donald Perera, they decided to buy Ukraine MIG 27 aircrafts.

Finally, in June 2006, an agreement was signed between the Air Force and Ukraine rash company. This was not an agreement between two governments and all payments were made to an unknown third party. It was known as Belimiss Holding Company. Sri Lanka was supposed to pay $ 15 million to these London-based companies. One aircraft was purchased for $ 2.4 million. This is more than double of the 2000 year purchased price.

This was firstly revealed by The Sunday Leader newspaper in 2007 by Lasantha Wickramathunge. He had continuously exposed the frauds of the MIG aircraft deal and finally he was killed.

An investigation of the MIG transaction was initiated by the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) in 2015. It has been revealed that during Udayanga Weerathunga’s period, he has been as Sri Lanka’s ambassador to Russia and has defrauded by him, millions of rupees.

Udayanga Weerathunga escaped from the country as the investigation began and there was a risk of his being arrested. Meanwhile, Udayanga Weerathunga had gone to give the notice, his house and his sister’s house to look into the matter, but there was no one to accept it.

Meanwhile, the Colombo Court has ordered the arrest of Udayanga Weerathunga, an international warrant in all three languages. Meanwhile, Udayanga Weerathunga was arrested in Dubai in 2018 and many people thought he would be brought back to Sri Lanka. However, he was released by the Dubai Police as there was no extradition law in Dubai and the country was issued a blue warrant.

Arresting him and presents to the courts is become dream of a Sri Lankan police.

During the presidential election period of MR. Gotabhaya Rajapakshe, there was an outdoor seminar was held in Dubai. Missing person Udayanga Weerathunga also participated for that seminar which was held in Dubai. Then social media were questioned, why did the Udayanga Weerathunga wasn’t arrested?

After that incident Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapakshe had become the president. After three months he became the power, the disappeared person Udayanga Weerathunga was again came to Sri Lanka. It was problematic. Did he get some protection from the government? It will be revealed in the future.
