“No Confidence Motions” has become a part of “Parliament Jokes” - Prof. Chandraguptha Thenuwara

“Right now, even we have lost our confidence over the ‘No Confidence Motions’. And it has become a part of the shenanigans of the parliament. The bunch of people who worked to have an impeachment earlier against the President, Pallewatta Gamaralage Sirisena, the main culprit for sabotaging the trust of the people, now wants to bring a no-confidence motion against the government. Now, people do not trust anyone anymore. Because of that rather than bringing no-confidence motions against anyone, they should have considered the fact whether they have the trust of people or not. “

On 21st of May 2019, Prof. Chandragupta Thenuwara expressed above statement at the People’s Assembly on the theme: “Terrorism, Extremism, and Social Responsibility”, organized by the Civil Society and Trade Union Collective (CSTUC) was held in Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute of International Relations and Strategic Studies (LKI). Ven. Dabara Amila Thero, Upul Jayasuriya (PC), Dr. Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu, Dr Wickramabahu Karunaratne, Dr Jehan Perera, Saman Rathnapriya, Chameera Perera were among the other speakers.

Further, there he expressed his views on hate speech,

“Now, we have a police force, who never hesitate to arrest writers on claims of disrespecting Buddhism, and never take any action against people who have been using hate speech frequently for the past four years, namely Mahinda Rajapaksha, Udaya Gammanpila, Wimal Weerawansha, and Madhumadhawa Aravinda. Seems, hate speech has become their sovereignty. It is because of them and their influence that it had sparked the violence on the 13th of May. Because of that reason, immediate legal action must be implemented against these hate speeches.”
